TOH-2022-226 - Rotational Thromboelastograp

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) Cardiac Aneasthesia Department is seeking to replace its existing, out of support, rotational thromboelastograph, called the Rotem delta 3000, with a newer, clinically equivalent equipment. The new equipment must be Health Canada approved, commercially available, tested and validated to perform point-of-care viscoelastic testing in a cardiac aneasthesia environment.
The vast majority (over 85 percent) of viscoelastic testing at UOHI is performed on anticoagulated patients on high dose heparin (about 3 units heparin per cc of blood). Our present treatment algorithm, based on the TACS trial, requires testing prior to neutralization of heparin to enable timely delivery of blood products to minimize bleeding, reduce unnecessary blood product transfusion and improve operating room (OR) efficiency and throughput.
