20241108ECD - REGIONAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN - NB

The Greater Miramichi Service Commission (GMSC) - EcoDiversion provides waste reduction programs to the City of Miramichi, Rural Community of Miramichi River Valley, the Rural Community of Alnwick, the Village of Doaktown, the Rural Community of Upper Miramichi, and the Greater Miramichi Rural District.

EcoDiversion's vision is to provide education to the residents within the GMSC in the effort to support waste reduction initiatives, strengthen diversion, and to minimize negative environmental, social, and economic impacts.

As of November 1st, 2024, EcoDiversion's curbside recycling program is now managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in New Brunswick. EcoDiversion continues to create and distribute the collection schedule and maintain the waste app, however, Circular Materials is responsible for the publicity & education to promote recycling within the Greater Miramichi region.
EcoDiversion does not currently hold or manage any contracts for solid waste collection (each Municipality and Rural District tender and manage their respective contracts with various service providers. EcoDiversion does not operate a transfer facility resulting in waste being directly hauled to the Red Pine Waste Management Facility. In 2016, the GMSC signed a 20-year agreement with the Chaleur Regional Service Commission where all waste collected within the Greater Miramichi Region will be
landfilled at the Red Pine Waste Management Facility.

To enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and service delivery, a review of the service is imperative.
